Samsung lists the Ultra 2’s 5,000-nit rating as localised peak brightness under strong light. It is not a number the whole screen holds at all times.

Feature by feature

1. Design and build

Design is where the size difference between these two watches is most apparent. The Watch 9 40mm weighs 31.5g and measures 8.6mm thick, and the 44mm weighs 34g at the same thickness. The Ultra 2 weighs 61.5g and measures 10.7mm thick. Even the larger Watch 9 weighs a little over half as much as the Ultra 2.

This matters more than it looks on a spec sheet. If you sleep with your watch on, commute with it, or just don’t like feeling extra weight on your wrist all day, the Watch 9 is the easier watch to live with. Samsung built it around a closer fit, using a new lug system and softer bands to reduce the gap between your skin and the sensors.

The Ultra 2 is still a big watch, but Samsung improved it over the first Ultra. The case is 12% thinner despite fitting a much bigger battery, and the bands are lighter and softer than before. Reviewers who tested it noted the improved comfort compared to the original Ultra, and some said the case now sits lower on the wrist and slips under a sleeve more easily.

The Watch 9 uses an aluminium case. The Ultra 2 uses titanium, which explains part of the price gap. Neither watch has the rotating bezel you get on Samsung’s Classic models.

2. Display

The Watch 9 has a 1.34-inch screen on the 40mm model and a 1.47-inch screen on the 44mm model, both rated up to 3,000 nits. The Ultra 2 steps up to a 1.52-inch screen rated up to 5,000 nits. Both use sapphire crystal on top.

You will notice the Ultra 2’s brighter screen mostly outdoors, in direct sun, when you need to read pace or navigation data at a glance. Treat the 5,000-nit figure as the screen’s ceiling in tough conditions, not its everyday brightness. Reviewers who wore the Ultra 2 in strong summer sun said the screen stayed easy to read without needing to shield it.

For regular indoor use, checking notifications, and everyday workouts, both screens are bright enough that the difference is hard to notice.

3. Performance and chip

Both watches share the same processor, the Snapdragon Wear Elite (SDW6100), and both have 2GB of RAM. This is one of the clearest similarities between the two watches, and it means neither one is faster than the other on paper.

The main split in this category is storage, not speed. The Watch 9 gives you 32GB, while the Ultra 2 doubles that to 64GB. That extra space matters if you plan to store music, maps, or apps directly on your watch for phone-free workouts. If you don’t use offline storage much, this difference won’t affect you.

4. Battery and charging

Battery life is the clearest gap between the two watches. The Watch 9 40mm has a 390mAh battery, and the 44mm has a 445mAh battery. Samsung rates both at up to 30 hours with the always-on display switched on, and up to 40 hours with it off.

The Ultra 2 has an 800mAh battery, which is close to double the Watch 9 44mm’s capacity. Samsung rates it at up to 60 hours with the always-on display on and up to 80 hours with it off. Independent testing backs this up. One reviewer used about 32% of the battery over 24 hours with the always-on display active, suggesting close to three days of typical use. Another reviewer got multiple days per charge while tracking workouts and notifications.

Charging results were less consistent. Samsung says the Ultra 2 takes about 90 minutes to fully charge. One reviewer matched that figure closely, while another reviewer’s unit took closer to three hours. This gap could come down to the charger, temperature, or the watch’s battery state at the time, so keep it in mind rather than expecting one exact number every time.

If multi-day battery life is a top priority, the Ultra 2’s bigger cell is the strongest reason to pay extra.

5. Durability and outdoor features

The Watch 9 offers 5ATM water resistance and IP68 protection. It also passed MIL-STD-810H military-grade testing. This covers everyday exercise, rain, and supported swimming.

The Ultra 2 goes further with 10ATM water resistance, IP69K protection, MIL-STD-810H testing, and EN13319 dive certification. Samsung’s 10ATM rating covers pressure equal to 100m underwater for up to 10 minutes in lab conditions, but the watch is meant for recreational diving down to 40m, not open-depth diving. IP69K adds resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature water jets.

The Ultra 2’s dive features track depth, dive time, and water temperature, and the watch can detect when you enter water. A separate diving app built with Mares, with more advanced dive-computer functions, is expected later in 2026. At launch, treat the Ultra 2 as dive-ready for basic recreational tracking, not as a full standalone dive computer yet.

Outside diving, the Ultra 2 adds Trail Run for elevation and terrain data, plus a Nutrition Alert feature that estimates hydration needs based on sweat loss and body weight. It also connects to external cycling sensors, which the Watch 9 does not support.

Choose the Watch 9 if your main activities are gym workouts, walking, road running, and casual swimming.
Choose the Ultra 2 if you regularly dive, hike, trail run, or train in tough outdoor conditions.

6. Health and sensors

Both watches use the same core sensor package. Samsung’s BioActive sensor handles optical and electrical heart signals plus body composition, alongside a temperature sensor, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic sensor, and light sensor.

That shared hardware powers the same health software on both watches, including sleep tracking, heart rate variability, a Heart Health Score, Daily Cardio Load, a Fitness Index, and blood oxygen monitoring. Some advanced features like ECG, blood pressure tracking, and sleep apnea detection require the Samsung Health Monitor app and, in some cases, a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone rather than just any Android phone.

Field testing of the Ultra 2 showed strong accuracy for steps and heart rate. In one walking test, it recorded 4,023 steps against a manual count of 4,000. In a cycling test against a Garmin watch, it matched heart rate readings exactly but overestimated elevation gain by a wide margin, a pattern the same reviewer saw across multiple tests. If you rely heavily on elevation data for hiking or trail running, treat the Ultra 2’s climbing numbers with some caution until Samsung improves the accuracy.

For everyday health tracking like heart rate, sleep, blood oxygen, and recovery, the Watch 9 gives you the same sensor platform as the Ultra 2 at a much lower price.

7. Software and smart features

Both watches run Wear OS 7 with One UI 9 Watch, and both include Google Gemini built in. You can lift your wrist and start talking to Gemini directly on either watch. Both also support Samsung Wallet for contactless payments and give you access to the same app store, including apps like Strava and iFIT.

The software is nearly identical on both watches. Buying the Ultra 2 does not unlock extra software. It mainly adds hardware, like the bigger battery, brighter screen, and outdoor durability features.

8. Connectivity and compatibility

Both watches need an Android phone running Android 13 or newer with at least 1.5GB of memory. Neither one works with an iPhone, so if you use an iPhone, this comparison won’t apply to your next watch purchase.

Both watches support dual-frequency GPS (L1+L5), along with GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, and QZSS for more accurate location tracking. Both also have Bluetooth 6.0 and dual-band WiFi. The Watch 9 comes in separate Bluetooth-only and LTE versions, while the US version of the Ultra 2 ships with LTE built in.
