Carrying the quiet hopes of Kajiado County and a nation that has been starved of a junior women’s 1,500 metres title since Faith Kipyegon’s triumph in Barcelona in 2012, 18-year-old Josephine Sembeyo will tomorrow stand on the track in Eugene, Oregon, visualising a golden redemption run that could rewrite history and inspire a new generation of girls from her home county.

Sembeyo says she wants to inspire girls who aspire to pursue education and sport despite the social challenges they face.

The soft-spoken teenager, who trains with the Magnolia Athletics Training Camp in Loitoktok, has emerged as one of Kenya's most promising middle-distance runners.

For Sembeyo, a Form Four student at AIC Girls Loitoktok, qualifying to represent Kenya at the global championships is the culmination of years of hard work, discipline, and determination.

Her journey began in Standard Seven. At that time, she simply enjoyed running. She did not know where her strength lay. However, everything changed when her coach, Andrew Lesuda, recognised her talent and encouraged her to specialise in middle-distance races.

"I started running while I was still in primary school, but I didn't know which event suited me best. My coach recognised my potential in the 1,500 metres and has guided me ever since. My goal is to reach the finals at the championships," said Sembeyo.

With Lesuda’s guidance, the young athlete has flourished, and this season has been the best of her career so far, earning her a place in Team Kenya for the World Under-20 Championships in Eugene. She hopes to make a name for herself on the global stage by winning.

Beyond the medals and personal bests, Sembeyo's story carries a deeper message. Growing up in Kajiado County, an area where some communities still face challenges such as early marriage and FGM, Sembeyo says that athletics has given her the chance to forge a different path.

Thanks to sport, she has managed to stay focused on her education while pursuing her athletic ambitions.

She hopes that her success will inspire more girls in her community to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.

"I want to show girls from my region that they can achieve their dreams too. Athletics has given me the chance to continue my education while competing at the highest level," said Sembeyo, who has always been inspired by triple 1,500 metres Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon.

She believes that, with determination, discipline, and the right support, young girls can overcome societal barriers and build successful futures.

In Eugene, she will be joined by compatriot Caren Chepchirchir as the two athletes seek to restore Kenya's dominance in the women's 1,500 metres.

Although the competition is expected to feature some of the world's best junior middle-distance runners, Sembeyo is feeling confident following months of intensive training.

She will focus on executing her race plan, staying patient through the early laps, and producing a strong finish when it matters most.

Regardless of the outcome, Sembeyo has already become a role model to many young girls back home. Every step she takes in Eugene will serve as a reminder that talent, hard work and perseverance can open doors.

When the starting pistol fires tomorrow, Sembeyo will be running to inspire a generation, proving that dreams can flourish with opportunity and determination, regardless of where one comes from.

Also competing on the second day is Judith Sapato, who will be taking part in the first round of the women’s 400 metres race and aiming to progress to the next stage.

Kelvin Bii will also be competing in the men’s triple jump, aiming to make his mark in the field event.

David Kapaiko and Wilson Chepkwech will be competing in the men’s 1,500m race for a place in the semi-finals, as they seek medals in the race.
