The debate over President William Ruto’s 2027 running mate is anchored on the wrong question. It is which choice would create the strongest electoral coalition, the most stable government and the broadest political base for a development programme beyond 2030.
But the most strategically consequential option is a senior ODM figure, especially from Nyanza. This is not a claim of ethnic entitlement but a judgment about political infrastructure, electoral complementarity and the leadership capacity required to carry difficult reforms.
The Ol Kalou by-election should have ended the illusion that any region is a permanent political deposit. DCP’s Sammy Kamau Ngotho won 35,440 votes against UDA’s 5,450. One constituency cannot predict a presidential election, but such a margin shows that incumbency cannot replace persuasion, organisation and coalition renewal.
The intelligent response is not to abandon Central Kenya or substitute one regional dependency for another, but to build redundancy into the presidential coalition through several dependable pillars, so that a setback in one region does not collapse the entire structure.
ODM offers that redundancy. Raila Odinga’s death in October 2025 was a shock, but it did not erase the political system he built. Despite internal challenges, the party retains its deepest base in Luo Nyanza and networks in Western Kenya, the Coast, parts of the Rift Valley, Northern Kenya and major urban centres.
Common political formations
These constituencies are not strangers being assembled hurriedly for an election. They have campaigned and voted within common political formations over several cycles. That familiarity offers protection against the narrow internal competition that often turns Kenyan coalitions into collections of rival regional franchises.
ODM therefore presents President William Ruto with several credible national partners. They are complemented by other strong leaders who offer a firm foundation for the reform-led task ahead.
