Two people were killed and 19 others injured after a bus ferrying students to the burial of former Technical University of Mombasa student leader Elvis Otieno overturned at Othoo area along the Awasi–Ahero Highway in Kisumu on Friday afternoon.
According to Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Peter Maina, the bus was travelling from Kisumu towards Awasi when the accident occurred.
"Upon reaching the scene of the accident, while trying to overtake an unknown motor vehicle, the driver lost control and veered off the road, landing on the right side of the road facing the Awasi direction," said Mr Maina.
The students sustained limb injuries, while some suffered cuts to the face and head and others sustained bruises.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to Ahero Sub-County Mortuary and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) Mortuary awaiting post-mortem examinations, while all the injured were rushed to Lisa Hospital for treatment.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and Siaya Governor James Orengo condoled with the families and students who lost their loved ones and colleagues, while cautioning the public against sharing unverified information about the accident.
"I appeal particularly to the student fraternity of TUM and to the wider Mombasa community to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information as the authorities establish the full circumstances and confirm the identities and condition of those involved," said Mr Nassir.
