The sudden death of lawyer and data privacy expert Rosemary Koech-Kimwatu, who was the head of data protection at KCB Bank Group, is a matter the technology and legal community is struggling to grapple with.
A condolence meeting held at the Nairobi Chapel on Wednesday afternoon, bringing together lawyers, her friends from the tech community and her employer, was a sad moment of reflection where the quick demise of a typically bubbly and resourceful woman was mourned.
One of the speakers remembered chatting with her just a day before she was found dead at her residence in Ngong on August 21. The Alliance Girls alumna died at 40, leaving behind four children, two of whom are twins.
“It is unbelievable that I am using past tense when referring to her, having chatted [with] her on the said Thursday at 6.31 pm,” the friend told the gathering.
Another friend described how they belonged to a feel-good group.
“She did some serious stuff, but she also partied,” the friend said.
KCB chose to ignore the comments that have been made around the work dynamics characterising Ms Koech’s final days, opting to celebrate her achievements.
Represented by Ms Caroline Wanjeri Kihara, the director of mortgage business at KCB Kenya, the bank said she was hired in June 2022.
