It is quite tragic that lives have been needlessly lost, serious injuries suffered, and property destroyed in a primitive and shameless clash over the holding of an opposition political rally in Homa Bay County. This is unacceptable in a country that has often been praised for its robust democratic system.
Two people, including a police driver, were killed and at least 46 others injured on Sunday. The officer was hit with a stone. The second victim was struck by a fleeing motor vehicle in one of the ugly scenes that have shocked the nation. The victims suffered serious injuries, including machete and gunshot wounds.
Journalists also came under attack from goons, who snatched their phones and equipment. Their only sin was turning up to cover the political rally. A local MP has been accused of rallying goons to flush Linda Mwananchi politicians out of hotels and ordering attacks on anyone voicing the “one-term” campaign slogan against President William Ruto.
The chaos, torching of cars, and destruction of property have sparked condemnation from political leaders, civil society, and residents, whose peace was shattered. Goons tried to block entry into the county for the rally by barricading roads and attacking convoys headed for Homa Bay Town. Some were reportedly ferried from the neighbouring Migori County.
The National Police Service arrested 37 suspects, some of whom had machetes and rungus, and has launched a manhunt for more.
The Constitution guarantees the right of all Kenyans to travel to any part of the country to sell their political programmes, carry out trade, or simply enjoy sightseeing.
Hired goons are said to have been paid Sh4,000 each to cause mayhem. Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja and Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) chief Mohamed Amin must ensure thorough investigations.
Rival political factions are already trading accusations, manifesting deep-seated tensions ahead of next year’s elections. The planners, funders and executors of the violence must be sought and brought to book.
