Mount Kenya University (MKU) emerged the overall winner in the Special Composition category sponsored by the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) at the 98th Kenya National Music Festival held at Kibabii University in Bungoma County.
MKU took first position with a presentation scripted and directed by Stephen Opanda, earning top honours in the university category.
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) finished second with a choral verse, while the University of Embu, Kenyatta University and other institutions also competed in the category.
In the University Public Speaking category, Kabarak University, Daystar University, the University of Embu, Egerton University, Kenyatta University and MKU were among the institutions that featured.
The category allowed university students to use stage presentations to address contemporary issues while demonstrating creativity and developing ideas through performance.
The Special Composition category tested participants’ ability to develop original stage works around a central theme, combining scripting, delivery and performance. The CA sponsorship formed part of the festival’s support for creative expression and communication, with participating institutions judged on the quality and execution of their presentations.
Among teachers training colleges, Thogoto Teachers Training College won the Special Composition category. Kilimambogo Teachers Training College finished second, while Bunyore Teachers Training College was third.
Bunyore’s third-place presentation, titled “Cheap Bargain”, was scripted by Chief Principal Achungo Elda and directed by Foy Ongaya and Victor Achesa. The performance centred on Kibwana, a Form Four graduate whose ambition to pursue higher education was threatened after he unknowingly bought a stolen smartphone.
